Why the “Right Fit” Matters!
Finding that “Just Right” JOB or that “Just Right” EMPLOYEE Makes a BIG Difference!
Helping our clients find that job or candidate that is the “just right fit” is our favorite thing to do. Maybe it’s because we like the challenge, but what is most important to us is the positive impact that comes from finding that “just right fit” for BOTH employees and employers.
This blog is all about why our recruiting and placement activities all revolve around the science and art of “fit finding” and describes the 5 areas where we thinking “that just right” fit makes a big difference to hiring success.
Here’s why FIT matters……
If you’re an EMPLOYER – numerous studies have shown that hiring employees who are the “just right fit” is one of the most predictable ways to improve a team’s productivity, create a work environment with less turnover, better morale. Employees selected for “fit” will outperform their less well matched colleagues as much as two to one. Employees who “fit” tend to stay on the job longer, work harder, and have a positive impact on team morale. Because employees who “fit” love what they do, they take very little management time, and in fact will positively impact everyone around them.
If you’re an EMPLOYEE, finding a job that is that “just right fit” sets the stage for you to actually look forward to Mondays (instead of Fridays). Not only will you love what you do, but you’ll be very good at it earning opportunities for increased pay and responsibilities. Chances are you’ll become one of those “long termers” – avoiding the hassle of changing jobs hoping to find “something better.” You know what its like to be in a job that “fits” and that “something better” is going to be your current job!
PACE’s proprietary “fit finding” process explores “fit” in 5 key areas….
JOB CONTENT. The “fit” between what an employee loves doing, what they are good at, and what their job allows them to do on a daily basis is probably the most important component of “fit”. Finding “job content fit” is all about understanding what skills, knowledge or experience it takes to do the job well, and matching those key requirements up with what the candidate loves doing, and does well.
COMPANY. The “fit” between what an employee values most about what they do at work (or how they want to contribute to the world) and what their employer does for a living – the products or services they make or deliver – can be a deal breaker when it comes to “fit.” When what an employee sees as important or valuable to them personally lines up with what a company produces or how it behaves as part of their larger social community, there is a “fit.”
WORK STYLE/TEAMWORK. The “fit” between how an employee prefers to get work done and how their team tends to get work done together, is a significant component of our fit finding. And its not about finding a candidate the team “likes”. Very likeable people aren’t always good fits for the workstyle of a team which boils down into how the employee and the team tend to define and do “teamwork”.
ASPIRATION/MOTIVATION/WIFM – is the “fit” between what an employee hopes to gain from going to work each day, and what the job, the company, or their team has to offer. When what a job delivers to an employee (more pay, better benefits, recognition, challenge, etc.) aligns with what an employee wants/needs from their job – their WIFM (“what in it for me”) – you have “motivational fit.”
LOGISTICS – you can’t escape the importance of fit when it comes to the logistics of the job. Can the employee work the schedule you need them to work? Are they able and willing to to work on site? Do they have the personal discipline to work from home? Right now, the fit between what the candidate can do and what the job requires logistically are really important.
Head swirling yet?
Don’t stress. While our team jas spent over 45 years perfecting our “fit finding” processes and incorporating new “fit finding” methods into our candidate screening and “job to employee matching” processes, we still know there’s more to learn about how to perfect the science and art of fit finding. We have invested thousands of hours and dollars in perfecting “fit finding” because there’s so much at stake….
Done right, that “just right fit” can make a huge difference for both the employer and their new employee! Done wrong, it can create a lot of issues – increased hiring costs, unexpected turnovers, and, if left unchecked, serious performance slumps.
Fit finding is what the hiring process is all about and can deliver big pay offs for both employers and employees. Prospective job candidates, hiring managers, and their recruiters play a big role in the success of any fit finding process. Everyone has homework to do!
