It’s been a year that has impacted all of our personal and working lives in new and unexpected ways while causing many to pause on their career.
Many job seekers who put their job searches on hold when the COVID-19 pandemic emerged earlier this year or were unexpectedly laid off chose to remain out of the workforce for various personal or safety reasons. With children at home and learning virtually, this was especially common for parents.
The recent economic downturn has put more high-performing, talented employees on the job market than ever before. The 2021 job market is gearing up to be among the most competitive with the amount of exceptional employees re-entering the workforce.
After the turbulent year we have all experienced and a busy holiday season ahead, millions of Americans are expected to re-enter the job market in the beginning of 2021. January is consistently a busy time on the job market as we all set out with news year resolutions and are optimistically inspired to better our lives with new beginnings, new challenges and new jobs.

Think before you put your job search and career on the back burner during the holiday season
With a couple of weeks until Thanksgiving and about 2 months until Christmas, Hanukkah and the New Year, most unemployed Americans aren’t looking to get back to work yet. But, here at PACE, we are recommending that if you are currently unemployed you should take full advantage of this opportunity to get ahead of the massive wave of new job seekers that will be looking for work in the new year and avoid the potential of being unemployed long-term. Many job seekers who have struggled to find employment in the past 6 months may rationalize that it’s okay to take off until the holiday season is settled and the new year commences.
Historically, we see a decline in the amount of candidates on the market here in the Northwest during the holiday season throughout November and December despite a full job board and open opportunities across a multitude of industries. While it is important during this time of year to embrace the renewed focus on family, friends and holiday traditions, it can be a time for advantageous for smart job seekers to job search and get ahead when there’s less competition – this is especially the case this year.
Less competition means you’ll stand out more and human resources will have fewer resumes to consider for the jobs you are applying for. There will be less networking and less activity on LinkedIn, making your efforts stand out even more! Between now and the beginning of 2021, double down your job hunting efforts while others are taking the season to relax. This includes:
- Keep activating your network for job leads
- Aggressively search and apply for new jobs
- Revamp your resume and LinkedIn profile to target the job and industry you want to work in
- Participate in online career meetups or job fairs
If you are starting your job search now and getting a jump start on all the other candidates entering the job market, do be prepared that you may not hear back immediately from some hiring managers or potential employers as this is prime vacation/PTO time. Don’t let this discourage you though – you are planting the seeds of opportunity and still ahead of most job seekers.
