3 million employees go to work each day in interim, part-time or “on demand” jobs.  The “flexible workforce” has been the fastest growing segment of marketplace since the 2008 recession.  And for good reason!

When you work as a temporary employee you can….

  • Expand your resume with new skills and work experiences
  • Check out a variety of employers as places to work
  • Earn money while in between jobs or getting ready to move
  • Create a life style that creates more free time, more flexibility

A Quick Q & A about what its like to be a “temp”:

With some exceptions, temporary work typically works best for employees who have mastered a certain set of skills or have a level of expertise that doesn’t require a lot of on the job training.  Most employers expect a temporary employee to come to work fully prepared to perform.

Some of the personal qualities that make for a successful “temp” include…

  • Initiative and resourcefulness – the ability to figure things out without a lot of help from others – is one of the key requirements for success.
  • A “go with the flow” personality or style – an ability to adjust to things that happen outside your control, to keep going in the face of unknowns.
  • A positive, helpful personality.    Our best temporary employees are people who actively look to make a difference in the short time they are on assignment.
  • Reliability –  a track record of coming to work every day – on time, ready to work.

In most cases yes.  There are many more temporary jobs being filled daily than there are employees hired into permanent roles.   The selection processes employers use to “hire” a temp tend to move faster and are less exacting.

While the temporary and contractor language can be used interchangeably, from a legal perspective they reflect  different types of employment.

A temporary job is just that – temporary employment.  Legally it can start and end without notice.

Contract assignments, on the other hand, typically involve some sort of formalized agreement between the employer and the employee (or their representative) specifying things like the length of the assignment, work content, results expected, under what conditions the contract can end.

While not a defining difference, many contract workers are self employed, working for themselves, paying themselves, filing taxes as an independent business.   Temporary employees,  on the other hand are always W2 employees, and typically work for an agency who contracts with an employer to provide them with temporary staff.

Temporary assignments start and stop “at will”.  An assignment can end without either cause or notice.  While most of the temporary assignments we represent are targeted to last 2-3 months,  the range varies from a few days to several years.  Most of the employers we represent take their commitment to our temporary workers seriouisly, and it is pretty unusual for an assignment to be cancelled prior to the anticipated end date.  Most typical is for the employer to ask our employees to extend their assignments beyond the expected end date.

Our recruiters will let you know what we’ve been told as the “length of an assignment” at the time you are presented with the assignment opportunity.

No. One of the best parts of becoming a temporary employee is that you get to choose when and for whom you work.  In fact, when we offer you an assignment,  we don’t want you to accept the assignment unless you are fully committed to completing it.

PACE realizes that things come up in a busy life that may require an employee to adjust a previous work commitment.    We also know that an employers also can make changes in the work content of an assignment in ways that makes it impossible for you to continue.  IOW, there are very legitimate reasons that you might elect to end an assignment without impacting your relationship with PACE, particularly if we get proper notice of your intent.

Ending an assignment for casual reasons, on the other hand, can become grounds for termination, and make you ineligible for future assignments.

All employees who work for PACE on temporary or contract assignments are paid weekly, every Friday.

Yes, in fact many of our clients look first to our temporary employees when it comes time to hire.   Many of our assignments are specifically designed to be what is called a “temp to hire” audition, giving both employees and employers a chance to check out each other before entering into a longer term employment relationship.

While we appreciate our temporary employees who are exclusive with us and therefore available to accept assignments as they come up, we understand there is often a need to  register with more than one agency to mimimize your down time between assignments.
